From Concept to Reality: A Grey Literature Review on Digital Twin Applications in Supply Chains

Abstract

The rapid digitalization of supply chains has led to the increasing adoption of digital twin technology, raising the question of whether it is merely a passing trend or a transformative force shaping the future of supply chain management. This study critically examines the practical implementation of digital twins in supply chains through a grey literature-based analysis, leveraging industry reports, white papers, and case studies to provide real-world insights. Given the scarcity of academic research on industrial adoption, grey literature offers valuable perspectives on how businesses integrate digital twins to enhance efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. To ensure credibility, the study applies the AACODS checklist, evaluating the authenticity, accuracy, coverage, objectivity, date, and significance of the sources. Furthermore, Ivanov’s seven-element model is employed as an analytical framework to assess key aspects of digital twin applications, including their role in visibility, predictive analytics, and decision support. The findings reveal the benefits and challenges companies face in deploying digital twins, the strategic role of technology providers, and the emerging trends influencing adoption. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of digital twins and their potential in reshaping supply chain digitalization.
