Abstract

A growing number of Social Network Sites (SNS) users are raising questions on the privacy and security of their information on the popular platforms. In recent years, various SNS have experienced several system crashes causing distress for a majority of users, as well as some high-profile scandals of security and privacy breaches. Subsequently, current users of these SNS are contemplating switching to less popular alternatives that may have a more reliable network and system. In the extant literature there is a gap in explaining this switching phenomenon with a comprehensive model. This paper addresses this gap with a literature review. The end result is a unified model of antecedents for switching from a social media to another, along with developing several relational propositions. Thus, this study responds to an important gap in the SNS literature, and guides future research to solve a contemporary problem in our world.
