In: Monopsonistic Labour Markets and the Gender Pay Gap

Abstract

This book has dealt with models of ‘new’ monopsony and their application to the empirical regularity of the gender pay gap. Other than perfect competition, these models give rise to upward-sloping labour supply at the level of the firm and therefore equip firms with some monopsony power over their workers due to workers’ mobility costs, heterogenous preferences, or incomplete knowledge. In contrast to models of ‘classic’ monopsony, however, no concentration on the demand side is needed to sustain monopsonistic outcomes, and firms may possess some monopsony power even in labour markets consisting of many employers.
