Abstract

Preference modeling plays a key role in MCDM/A, when considering the use of the DM’s preferences in the decision model. It is the basic process for obtaining preference information from a DM, in a preference-driven decision process. This preference information in general is processed in order to obtain parameters of the decision model, for instance: the criteria weights. The two basic paradigms are presented: elicitation by decomposition and holistic evaluation. The former is related to the consequences space in the decision context, and the latter is associated with the action space. In decomposition elicitation, three procedures are presented: the classical tradeoff elicitation procedure, the swing procedure, and the ratio procedure. Holistic evaluation may be applied for inferring parameters of the decision model. Most methods are based on only one of these two paradigms. Few methods use both paradigms. For instance, the FITradeoff method combines and integrates both paradigms.
