Abstract

This chapter outlines the role of management accountants and the impact of accounting information on decisions related to outsourcing organizational functions. The research study utilizes a combination of interviews, archival records and documentation to collect and analyze data from a prominent Saudi organization currently having three major outsourcing agreements in its supply chain function: Third-Party Logistics, Offshore Purchasing, and Third-Party Manufacturing. The three cases demonstrate how management accountants have transitioned from merely supporting the decision-making process to actively participating in it. In these outsourcing cases, the role of management accountants is particularly evident in tasks such as risk analysis, supplier selection, cost analysis for projects and proposals, inventory record monitoring, performance measurement, and detailed reporting of key performance indicators (KPIs). Furthermore, management accountants are shown to play significant roles in addressing strategic issues through their involvement in multifunctional teams, which usually look more at operational processes than just functions. This integration indicates the depth of their engagement and underscores their significance in shaping organizational strategies and operational efficiencies in the context of outsourcing.
