Abstract

Bhagalpur, called the “Silk City” in India, is famous for its silk-weaving tradition and diverse products. However, the silk industry in Bhagalpur faces challenges because the yarn used in weaving has become very expensive. The weavers, essential for making these designs, cannot afford to buy the costly yarn. It is not just the expensive yarn; there is also tough competition from cheaper synthetic fabrics like Chinese silk, Koria, Viscose and synthetic staples. This change has made it harder for local weavers to earn good wages. Many Bhagalpur textile firms struggle to get enough money to grow and update their technology. Access to banks makes it even more challenging. Weavers also need help with issues like low pay, lack of recognition, and declining demand, discouraging young people from learning this craft. Overcoming these challenges is essential to keeping Bhagalpur’s silk tradition alive and passing on weaving skills to the next generation.
