Abstract

Traditional risk management strategies often focus on restoring normal operations as quickly as possible. However, a new concept—supply chain plasticity—is gaining traction that offers a more dynamic and resilient approach. Supply chain plasticity refers to a firm’s capability to rapidly and significantly alter its supply chain network structure to accommodate substantial shifts and disruptions in the business environment. Unlike conventional methods that aim to return to a pre-disruption state, plasticity involves making dramatic changes to how a firm’s supply chain operates, often resulting in a new protocol that better aligns with the post-disruption environment. When implemented correctly, supply chain plasticity has the potential to significantly improve recovery, resilience, and responsiveness of supply chains.
