Abstract

To this point we have only considered mathematical and algorithmic descriptions of computational methods, but several other aspects impact the computational efficacy of a project. In particular, a vast number of computational decisions, such as which language and computing platform to use, affect the practicality of a large computational effort. There are numerous architectures on which computational tasks can be performed, and different computing platforms lend themselves to different tasks. A host of languages other than MATLAB and Octave are options, each with advantages and disadvantages. While our focus has been on MATLAB and Octave, a computational scientist requires dexterity on these fronts. After all, you may find yourself working with a team that has already spent years developing specialized codes in languages foreign to yourself. Moreover, the computing environment might use an operating system with which you are unaccustomed, and the computing architecture could differ from your experience.
