Abstract

The origins of OperationsResearch (OR), stemming from the discovery of radar and its military applications in the late 1930s and the start of World War II (WWII), provide a classical case of how individuals from diverse fields and interests can give birth to a new discipline. On both sides of the Atlantic, scientists from almost all professions joined military-sponsored groups whose main function was to apply current scientific knowledge to improve the outcomes of battle situations—on land, sea, and air. In the U.S., an amazing cadre of scientists became involved with a broad range of military problems across all services and bent their talents to their resolution with great success.
