Abstract

The chapter analyses the performance of the agricultural sector in India after reforms and associates it with pre-reforms situations. An organized systematic data description is presented to comprehend the factors of poor agricultural performance with reference to agricultural policies and state role during liberalization and post-liberalization period. It has been identified that in the period post the economic reforms there has been structural shift in pattern of cropping—be it food grains or non-food grains. The slowdown in the productivity of agriculture is caused due to other pertinent factors such as withdrawal of state support, poor implementation of policies, lack of infrastructure, technological lock-in, overburden of imports.
