Abstract

To arrive at the optimal price that the affected are willing to pay in arsenic affected regions of West Bengal in order to continue in leading a healthy life one needs to identify various hidden costsHidden costs . To identify these costs we undertook in-depth socio economic surveysSurveys in arsenic infested regions of Murshidabad, West Bengal. Findings from this survey not only helped to determine the method to arrive at the most viable value for willingness to pay, it also revealed the missing defence mechanisms, absence of which, were escalating this cost and eventually forcing those affected into a vicious cycle of poverty.
