Abstract

Companies are increasingly seeking growth in the Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP)—that is, the roughly four billion people living in low-income markets. Disruptive innovations, which significantly open up markets by introducing large populations of non-consumers by making products or services more affordable, more convenient or easier to use have the potential to create growth at the BOP market. Several examples of disruptive innovations for the BOP exist in India, which have also been dubbed as frugal innovations. This book examines disruptive innovations in the healthcare segment emerging from India in order to shine light on the conditions under which develop these innovations in the BOP context. This chapter introduces the context and the research problem. It also discusses the research objectives and scope of the book. The overall structure of the book and the chapters are also described.
