Abstract

In academia, writing a paper is regarded as a concentrated reflection of a researcher’s capabilities. When we turn our gaze to the business world, especially the early stages of entrepreneurship, we find a striking similarity between writing a paper and founding a company. Neither is the result of a sudden flash of inspiration; both are processes that require systematic thinking, repeated refinement, and leveraging the help of others. Starting from the core steps of writing a paper, it is not difficult to extract several key insights applicable to the entrepreneurial process—insights that can help entrepreneurs avoid detours and accelerate progress. This chapter aims to offer technical professionals with entrepreneurial aspirations a comparative perspective, enabling them to draw analogies between the familiar process of academic writing and the entrepreneurial journey. Much like transfer learning, when the underlying skills of two seemingly different operations are the same, proper skill transfer can yield disproportionately effective results in a new context.
