Abstract

This chapter emphasizes the strategic value of supply chains for reliability, cost optimization, market responsiveness, and risk dispersion. It advocates the principle: “use the supply chain whenever possible; avoid independent R&D unless necessary.” Independent R&D carries high technical, market, and sunk costs, with failure risk rising exponentially with complexity. The chapter encourages companies to focus on core competencies and conduct independent R&D selectively, building resilient, efficient strategies to thrive amid uncertainty.
