Abstract

In this chapter we benchmark the performance of the GCC countries in a number or areas that have a bearing on STI, entrepreneurship and associated enterprise development in the knowledge era. While we apply standard indicators where available, mostly taken from official statistics, we use informal sources including opinion surveys, to allow for comparisons in other respects as well. In conclusion, the GCC countries have attained a relatively high income level and display noteworthy progress and impressive rankings in various respects. Along with the wider region, however, they continue to meet with severe challenges on their journey towards diversified knowledge-based societies.
