Three Societal Function Systems and the Impact of Digital Media

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explain the concept of societal function systems, especially focusing on three function systems with the highest relevance for universities: education, science, and (academic) mass media. This perspective may lead to a better understanding of the different rationales in the three functional domains and serves as a grid to observe the impact of digital media on these three function systems.
