Abstract

Summary Semantic Web services are a prominent application area for ontologies, and Semantic Web technologies in general. Using Semantic technologies such as ontologies for describing Web services enables automating tasks such as discovering, combining, and executing services. In this chapter we survey the aspects relevant to the description of Semantic Web services through an overview of the Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO), which provides a conceptual model for describing services. We then survey in more detail the various uses of ontologies in Web service descriptions. Finally, we describe other prominent Web service description frameworks and contrast them with WSMO, in particular WSDL-S, OWL-S, and SWSF.
