Abstract

Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR) is increasingly recognized as a pivotal governance framework for organizations navigating digital transformation. This chapter explores the BARMER case, a leading German statutory health insurance, which operationalizes CDR through an ethically anchored digital strategy. Within highly regulated healthcare environments and evolving data ethics standards, BARMER integrates CDR across five core domains: data governance, digital ethics, employee empowerment, climate impact, and inclusive access. By implementing a values-based approach including transparency, patient centricity, and autonomy, BARMER advances responsible digital innovation while fostering trust, sovereignty, and social impact. Key initiatives such as the DigiCoaches program, the digital learning platform “DigiTal,” and transparency-enhancing services like the ePA (electronic patient record) exemplify how ethical digitalization can be embedded in practice. Furthermore, the case reflects BARMER’s active role in shaping public discourse through its commitment to the CDR-Initiative and collaboration on cross-sectoral policy innovation. This contribution provides actionable insights for practitioners and policymakers, demonstrating how digital responsibility can be institutionalized within complex health systems to enhance societal resilience and organizational legitimacy.
