Megan Epler Wood on the Role of Entrepreneurship in Tourism

Abstract

USA | Megan Epler Wood has led academic, business, civil society and philanthropic organizations managing sustainable tourism since 1990. Her firm EplerWood International designs net positive regional tourism development projects with past support from the World Bank, IFC, IDB, GIZ and USAID. Her current research and online courses with Harvard and Cornell universities have tested a range of new methods to help protect destinations using digital systems with standardized social and environmental metrics. Her 2017 book, Sustainable Tourism on a Finite Planet and the 2019 report Destinations at Risk; The Invisible Burden of Tourism offer insights for all students in this profession. In 2020–2021 and beyond, Epler Wood and the team are focused on digitally training future professionals and financing destination sustainability for the long-term, post-COVID-19.
