Abstract

Estonia | Aivar Ruukel is the founder of Soomaa.com and a nature guide in Soomaa National Park, Estonia. He is committed to continuing the culture of building and promoting the traditional dugout canoe in Soomaa National Park. Aivar is a Board Member of the Global Ecotourism Network since 2018, a member of the Estonian Ecotourism Network since 1993, one of the initiators of the national ecotourism quality scheme ‘Estonia—the Natural Way’ (2000), and the organizer of the first European Ecotourism Conference held in Pärnu in 2010. Aivar is a sustainable tourism auditor at Green Destinations and a board member of EDEN Network AISBL. Aivar has won many accolades, like the Best Promoter of Tourism by the Estonian Association of Travel Agents in 1997, Best of the Year by the Estonian Hotel and Restaurant Association in 2007, Honorary Nature Conservation Badge by the Estonian Ministry of Environment in 2017 and Tourism Developer of Pärnu County in 2020.
