Abstract

USA | Hitesh Mehta is one of the world’s leading authorities, practitioners and researchers on ecotourism, physical planning and architectural aspects of ecolodges. Hitesh has specialised in working with indigenous communities and ensuring that their settlements are self-sufficient and the fauna protected from the money earned through tourism. He has over 18 years of work experience improving human settlements, promoting ecological restoration and low-carbon development, and the socio-economic benefits gained to the local communities. In July 2006, National Geographic Adventure magazine identified Hitesh as one of five Sustainable Tourism Pioneers in the world mainly because of his master planning work to protect endangered habitats and alleviate human poverty. He is the author and photographer of the award-winning Authentic Ecolodges (launched by Harper Collins in November 2010). Hitesh is also the editor of the International Ecolodge Guidelines and co-author of the chapters on Site Planning and Architectural Design.
