Abstract

Sensor or sensing devices in the form of wearables have drawn a lot of attention in the past few years. Technologies such as fitness trackers and smartwatches allow controlled insight on heart rate, body fat, or sleep quality. However, sensing technology is not limited to wearable devices. Especially in the healthcare sector, utilization of multiple sensor types and systems shows promise. This chapter provides an overview of existing sensor elements and measurable parameters and demonstrates healthcare applications in prevention, diagnostics, and therapy. Current trends integrate biomedical sensing with feedback systems that actively engage and influence patient movement and behavior. These advances come with challenges and raise questions for future implementation of sensor systems in therapy.
