Abstract

The new digital business models only intensify the existing competitive forces. The relative bargaining power of suppliers, buyers/customers, substitutes (like 3D printing) and new entrants (like digital forwarders) defines the intensity of competition within freight forwarding. Forwarders have traditionally invested in organic and inorganic growth as well as in upgrades of the operational system for cost reductions. Today, forwarders without digital sales channels lose out on growth. Yet only 1 out of the top 18 forwarders was prepared Q3 2017 to offer the necessary levels of digital access. Forwarders are cooperating with and investing into startups to not solely rely on internal software developments. This will make them more digital over time. Their new digital challengers will become more ‘conventional’ over time as they cannot escape the realities of large companies with large customer requirements. The most likely future will be digital, with both legacy forwarders and new entrants having a role.
