Family Climate: Driving Organizational Resilience of Hidden Champions

Abstract

Exogenous shocks and associated crises are part of the natural economic cycle. Just recently, companies around the world have encountered economic distress in the Covid-19 pandemic. We know from previous research that individuals attempt to mobilize social resources in times of crisis to mitigate crisis induced negative outcomes such as uncertainty, mental distress, and anxiety. In this chapter, we study the role of a positive family climate in providing access to rich social resources that help to cope with economic crises. Therefore, we extend the field of organizational resilience and offer a novel theoretical lens on hidden champions’ research. Hidden champions are distinguished by their ability to cultivate a strong family climate that significantly enhances their organizational resilience. This study presents a theoretical framework exploring how the distinctive family climate of hidden champions serves as a critical factor in fostering their organizational resilience. We conclude by suggesting future research directions and managerial implications.
