Abstract

Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have brought the autonomy, control, and human oversight of AI systems to the forefront of debate. As traditional roles are shifting to machines making independent or semi-autonomous decisions, these enhancements are increasing efficiency and performance. However, there have been concerns that machine autonomy could amplify bias that may result in serious financial, legal, or reputational harm at the expense of human rights. This has led to a series of campaigns promoting the safe deployment and ethical use of AI systems to foster accountability, transparency, and oversight. This chapter explores how autonomous AI systems can be governed responsibly throughout their lifecycle. To achieve the research intent, the chapter employs a literature review methodology to explore the nuances of AI autonomy, its control mechanisms, and a model for effective human oversight, thereby ensuring the responsible development and deployment of AI that enhances societal trust. Academic databases such as Scopus and Web of Science were used for data collection. Five research objectives were assessed and presented in the discussion section. This reveals the findings from the dataset as reflected in the varying forms of machine autonomy and prominent controls guiding AI deployment. The chapter also provided insights into emerging regulations from within Africa and suggested solution pathways. The chapter contributes to ongoing debates on protecting human rights from the challenges surrounding the use of autonomous AI in various business sectors.
