Abstract

The concept of CSR does not have a long history in Turkey, but its importance has significantly increased in recent years. CSR and sustainability concepts are developing in the Turkish business world with legal and national decisions and international treaties. As a result of regulatory arrangements and the increasing community awareness about CSR, it became a considerable factor for employer attractiveness. This chapter explores CSR expectations of young job seekers in Turkey. An online survey on 555 university students revealed that social responsibility plays role on employee preferences. Responsibility towards employees and general workplace related characteristics are significant determinants of employer attractiveness. Young Turkish job seekers attach major importance to work atmosphere, career opportunities, job security and social services, employees’ security and health. However, factors related to socio-ecological responsibility is found to exert a minor role on employer choice. This finding is in accordance with the high uncertainty avoidance score of Turkish culture. Yet, prominence of job security concerns and the marginalized importance of socio-ecological responsibility may be attributed to existing macro-economic problems and especially to the high unemployment rates in Turkey.
