Abstract

For many people, the term “Taiji” 太极 is synonymous with “Taijiquan” 太极拳, a style of martial arts based on Taiji philosophy. In Chinese culture, Taiji is much more than a set of physical exercise. It is an all-encompassing universal concept from which a complete culture has developed over thousands of year of Chinese civilization. This article explains the philosophical foundation of Taiji and uses the “Taijitu” (Taiji diagram) to illustrate the concepts of Taiji. The important role of “He” (harmony) as the core foundation of Taiji is identified and the means to attain “He” through Taiji cultural education and practice is discussed. Next, the practical steps to learn Taiji culture according to the curriculum at “Tian Zhen Yuan” (see Appendix 1), designed by its founder Xing Qi-Lin, is explained. Finally, various case studies are presented as real-world examples of Taiji culture applied in diverse community contexts.
