Abstract

The problem that the chapter tries to solve is the lack of support in the packaging industry for taking the first step towards innovations in sustainability. As a result will be examined sustainable practices adopted by companies in the packaging industry as innovations in packaging materials, design, production processes, recycling, and waste management as the main areas of changes. It will be analyzed showing the costs and benefits associated with implementing sustainable packaging solutions and the effect (IRR, NPV). The research is focused on two selected, real case-study companies, both working in the packaging sector and doing similar innovations in production processes. The research was conducted by a literature review, desk research, and case study analysis of financial documents and business plans. Based on those analyzed case-studies with the IRR indicator at the end of the project’s period and without subsidy was planned at the level of IRR = 4.68% and IRR = 30.27%. It is worth encouraging companies to multiply sustainability activities by showing those examples. The smaller company showed significantly higher project effectiveness on NPV and IRR. This may be an area for further examining whether the size of the company has an influence on effectiveness in sustainable projects.
