Switzerland: A New Playground for Tourism in the Twentieth Century?

Abstract

Switzerland is a pioneer in the emergence of tourism in the nineteenth century, but its development over the following century is mixed. Forced to abandon certain strategies that made it successful due to changes in the economy (crises) and in the political situation (wars), faced with an increasingly competitive international market, it adopts new institutional, technical, and financial tools that gradually transform all aspects of the tourism sector. While the winter season is becoming predominant in the tourist calendar, more attention is also being paid to the cultural and historical diversity of the country. This has led to a change in the hotel stock, with new buildings attracting a socially and internationally diverse clientele. But more importantly, the intervention of the central government not only makes it possible to find ways of reducing the burden of debt, but also to solicit new financial resources to renovate infrastructures, many of which have become outdated.
