Abstract

This chapter explores the role of the arts and cultural economy in the broader U.S. economy, using data from the Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Accounts (ACPSA). It offers a comprehensive analysis of the arts sector’s contributions to economic growth, employment, and compensation, comparing core and supporting industries over two decades (2001–2021). The report highlights the significant impact of digitization, technological change, and the COVID-19 pandemic on the sector. The analysis reveals that growth in the arts and culture economy has a positive effect on overall economic growth, although not all cultural and tourism sectors demonstrate complementary relationships. Through empirical tests, it suggests that the arts economy drives broader state-level economic growth, but government support and tourism-related industries have less clear impacts.
