Abstract

This chapter covers the history of the Austrian School of economics in Japan primarily through biographical details of the two most prominent Japanese-Austrian economists, Katsuichi Yamamoto and Toshio Murata. Katsuichi Yamamoto published the first systematic study of the socialist calculation debate in the world and argued the position of Ludwig von Mises before engaging in a lifetime of advocacy for free markets in Japan. Toshio Murata, meanwhile, was awarded a fellowship to study with Mises in New York and translated a number of Mises’ major works into Japanese. The chapter concludes by describing some more recent publications and activities of economists working under the banner of the Austrian School in Japan.Austrian School of Economics[aut]v.
