Abstract

The fundamental liberalismFundamental liberalism of Ludwig von Mises[aut]v. Mises Ludwig was born in the years when the new-born Austrian Republic was under the distress of a post-war economic and political crisis. It was a drastic renewal of the liberalism that Mises inherited from his mentors. Mises started his investigation from Böhm-Bawerk’s 1905 seminar and developed his theory in competition against his ex-classmates––Otto Bauer and Joseph Schumpeter[aut]Schumpeter Joseph. While in Vienna from 1918 to 1923, Mises struggled to save the new-born Austrian Republic from the crisis. Prevention of the seizure of power by Bolsheviks, stop of inflation, avoiding banking crisis, and campaign against annexation by Germany were four fronts to which Mises devoted himself. Though he failed to save it, at last, the fundamental liberalismFundamental liberalism he grounded on his aprioristic rational view of human actionHuman action has a universality that can be transplanted beyond national borders.
