Digitalization of Nursing to Overcome Staffing Shortages? Categorization and Market Access of Digital Applications

Abstract

Sooner or later, digital change will transform nursing. Robotics and digitalization could help to maintain or even improve the future quality of care. Potential applications can be categorized into service and transportation robotics, emotional robotics (entertainment and interaction offers), technical aids to relieve the physical strain on caregivers, support from background systems (e.g. for electronic documentation), telemonitoring and telecare, digital health and care applications (known as DiGA/DiPA in Germany) such as apps, robots that perform “real care” such as washing, changing bandages, etc.; these will only be available in the distant future. To gain market access, technical applications in nursing must meet the same safety rules, proof of benefits, and cost-effectiveness standards as any other innovation in the healthcare sector. Firstly, this serves to protect patients and, secondly, it protects the financiers of the health system from uneconomical approaches.
