Abstract

This Chapter describes a case study of the Warga Peduli AIDS Project (WPA) in Bandung, West Java, which embarks on the positive correlation between poverty and poor health and the bi-directional relationship between HIV and under-development, indicating that poverty leads to higher HIV transmission and HIV further increases poverty. This relationship creates a vicious circle of poverty and health which may hamper the overall process of sustainable development. As such, income and savings have become crucial as households of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) struggle to build and protect their economic resources, while the socio-economic impact of HIV becomes just as important as the health impact of the disease. The Chapter further documents that microfinance only has a limited effect on the improvement of the life of PLHIV if the form of microfinance goes beyond the common practice of access to financial services and encompasses, among others, improved access to health, education and social services. Here, the new Integrated Microfinance Management (IMM) approach can provide a substantial contribution, as IMM has obviously been developed to encompass medical, educational and social services at the community level, capable of generating a better quality of life for PLHIV, at least in terms of increasing their access to health services in both the financial and medical respect. In particular, the related integration of health education about the nature of the disease, its prevention and treatment, as well as the surrounding stigma, together with the underlying systems of people’s indigenous knowledge and practices, will increase the quality of life not only of PLHIV, but also of their family members and the community in which the WPA can play an important role at the community level.
