Spatiotemporal Characterization and Hazard Assessment of Compound Extreme Events of Maize in Songliao Plain based on CEMI

Abstract

Since global climate anomalies have led to a significant increase in extreme weather and climate events, including their intensity and spatial extent, it is particularly important to study extreme events to ensure agricultural production. First, in this study, the standardized precipitation requirement index (SPRI) and standardized temperature index (STI) were used to characterize agricultural drought and waterlogging and heat, respectively, and the compound drought and heat magnitude index (CDHMI) and compound waterlogging and heat magnitude index (CWHMI) were constructed by modeling the marginal distribution. Next, the occurrence patterns of identified compound drought and heat events (CDHEs) and compound waterlogging and heat events (CWHEs) were statistically analyzed. Finally, a hazard assessment model was constructed by fitting probability density curves. The results showed that CWHEs in the maize growing season in the Songliao Plain mainly occurred in the northern part of the study area, and CDHEs mainly occurred in the central and southern parts of the study area. The number of both CDHEs and CWHEs increased in most parts of the Songliao Plain. Higher hazard classes for CDHEs occur mainly in the middle of the maize reproductive period, while higher hazard classes for CWHEs occur mainly in the late maize reproductive period.
