Usability Evaluation of Zakat Chain: Blockchain-Based Smart Contracts for Transparent Zakat Management

Abstract

Zakat Chain is a blockchain-based platform designed to improve the transparency and efficiency of Zakat management through smart contracts and tokenization. The proposed system encodes Zakat rules (e.g. nisab threshold and 2.5% levy) in self-executing smart contracts, automating the calculation and distribution of Zakat contributions. A custom token akin to the gold Dinar is integrated to represent a stable, Shariah-aligned asset for transactions, mitigating concerns over cryptocurrency volatility. We outline the system architecture and development workflow, including the smart contract logic and token integration, and evaluate the platform’s usability with end-users. Results from a Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) indicate high user satisfaction and ease of use at the 89.90%. The discussion highlights that leveraging blockchain’s transparency and immutability can enhance trust in Zakat processes, as all transactions are auditable and tamper-proof. In summary, the Zakat Chain demonstrates the potential of merging classical Islamic finance principles with modern blockchain technology to achieve a more transparent, trustworthy, and user-friendly Zakat management system.
