The Characteristics of the Spatial and Temporal Changes in the Green Development of the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin Cities Economic Circle

Abstract

Urban greenery and sustainable development have emerged as central issues in the high-quality growth of regions. This study concentrates on 16 cities in the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, analyzing statistical data from 2011 to 2021. Employing the Rank Sum Ratio (RSR) comprehensive evaluation method in conjunction with GIS spatial analysis technology, we systematically investigate the spatiotemporal evolution and regional disparities in green development within the area. Key findings are as follows: (1) Although the overall green development level in the Chengdu-Chongqing region demonstrates steady growth, significant regional disparities remain. Chengdu and Chongqing continue to play core driving roles, whereas secondary cities and peripheral areas fall behind. (2) Spatially, the region displays a pattern of “dual-core drive, central weakness, peripheral differentiation.” The 2011 distribution formed a “pyramid-shaped” structure with a few high-tier cities, which gradually shifted to a “spindle-shaped” configuration in 2016, featuring more mid-tier cities. By 2021, this spindle-shaped pattern persisted but exhibited notable internal restructuring. (3) Regional disparities mainly arise from disparities in resource endowments, industrial structures, and policy implementation efficiency. To close these gaps and progress towards green, low-carbon, and sustainable development, empirical research suggests actionable recommendations.
