Abstract

Marine microplastic pollution has emerged as a major global environmental issue. This review systematically analyzes the research progress and challenges in this field. Current microplastic detection methods lack standardization, hindering data comparability. Ecological risk assessments confirm that microplastics can be ingested by organisms and transferred through food chains, causing physical damage and toxicological effects. However, their actual environmental risks still require validation. End-of-pipe treatment technologies and international cooperation are critical to addressing these challenges. Moving forward, efforts should focus on method standardization, deepening mechanistic research, and strengthening global governance to effectively control pollution risks.
