Abstract

The consumption habits of Generation Z are increasingly guided by a pressing need to seek out rare and memorable experiences. Within the tourism and hospitality sectors, the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) has emerged as a dominant influence, shaping where and how this generation travels, what they value, and how they interact with brands. As digital natives heavily immersed in social media, real-time engagement, and peer trends, Gen Z exhibits a heightened sensitivity to this phenomenon. This paper explores whether FOMO significantly sways Gen Z’s travel and spending choices within these industries. The study introduces the concept of the “Gen Z FOMO Economy” and investigates how companies can effectively leverage this generational urgency for limited-time or once-in-a-lifetime experiences. It highlights how FOMO shapes decision-making and discusses actionable branding and engagement strategies that help businesses strengthen customer loyalty, foster deeper connections, and thrive in a competitive market.
