Abstract

This study examines the challenges and opportunities faced by Asnaf entrepreneurs within the Kedah Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector, a marginalized community that benefits from zakat contributions. Despite the growing emphasis on entrepreneurship as a tool for poverty alleviation, Asnaf entrepreneurs encounter significant barriers that hinder their business development. This study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the current state of Asnaf entrepreneurship, identifying key challenges and exploring opportunities for enhancing entrepreneurial success. The study adopts a quantitative research design, employing a cross-sectional survey of 50 Asnaf entrepreneurs in Kedah covering dimensions such as registration, management ability, human resource management, product development, technological innovation, promotion, financial ability, place, price, and stakeholder engagement. Descriptive analyses were conducted using SPSS to evaluate the mean score for each dimension. The results reveal strengths in pricing strategies (94%) and human resource management (93%), while key challenges persist in areas like business registration (22%), financial management (46%), and distribution strategies (32%). These findings suggest that targeted policy interventions, such as simplified registration processes, implementing enhanced financial literacy programmes, and providing access to technological support, are crucial to strengthening Asnaf entrepreneurs’ success and ensuring long-term sustainability. Addressing these barriers, it will contribute to inclusive economic growth and align with ESG principles by empowering Asnaf entrepreneurs to reduce poverty, create jobs, and boost household incomes while promoting social equity and fostering sustainable local economic development. Future studies should explore the long-term impacts of these interventions and expand the focus to include non-financial barriers to entrepreneurship.
