Transitioning to Solar Energy in Malaysia: A Study of Residential Solar Users and Non-Residential Solar Users

Abstract

Solar energy is recognized as a popular alternative energy source with significant potential to meet the world’s growing energy demand. In Malaysia, driven by the nation’s commitment to sustainable development, residential solar energy adoption has gained momentum in recent years. Through a preliminary survey conducted by distributing the online questionnaires, it explores the experiences of current residential solar users and assesses the interest of non-solar users in future adoption. A non-probability sampling approach is employed, to specifically target residential solar energy homeowners with a total of 102 respondents. Meanwhile, a convenience sampling method is used to gather data from non-solar users with 124 respondents. The findings highlight several advantages experienced by the residential solar users, including decrease reliance on traditional power sources, leading to lower electricity bills and long-term financial savings and can reduce dependency on fossil fuels, promoting environmental sustainability. Despite high awareness and strong interest among non-solar users in future installation, there are also some key challenges that become the hindrance such as high installation costs, low awareness on incentives provided and existing monthly commitment. These insights contribute to the ongoing discourse on residential solar energy adoption, providing valuable information for the government policy makers and industry stakeholders. The researchers seek to promote sustainable energy solutions through the solar energy installation with the experiences shared by residential solar energy users and address barriers to widespread adoption in future among the non-solar users.
