Abstract

Doping stands out as a significant ethical concern that is underlined by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and various international sports federations. Annually, such issues cast a negative shadow on sports activities. This study specifically focuses on the Anti-Doping Agency of Malaysia (ADAMAS) to achieve three key objectives: (1) Identify the obstacles hindering athlete participation in the anti-doping education programs organized by ADAMAS; (2) Explore the challenges encountered by ADAMAS in delivering anti-doping education initiatives to athletes; and (3) Suggest strategies and approaches that ADAMAS could adopt to increase athlete engagement in their anti-doping education programs. This research utilizes a qualitative methodology, involving in-depth interviews with representatives from two pertinent government agencies, officials from the Olympic Council of Malaysia, and executives from the National Sports Association. The study findings regarding the first objective revealed at least five factors acting as barriers to athlete involvement in the anti-doping education programs arranged by ADAMAS. In regard to the second objective, three primary challenges were identified that ADAMAS faces in implementing an effective anti-doping program in Malaysia. Lastly, regarding recommendations, this study proposes seven strategies for ADAMAS to consider.
