Empirical Analysis of the Kuznets Environmental Curve and Its Determinants Evidence from Real Data in China

Abstract

This paper aims to utilize provincial-level data on economic growth and environmental quality in China from 2008 to 2022 to establish an empirical model examining the relationship between economic growth and environmental quality. The study explores whether China satisfies the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, using wastewater emissions, sulfur dioxide emissions, and industrial solid waste as indicators of environmental quality. Additionally, the paper investigates the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI), industrial structure, and urbanization levels on environmental quality. The findings indicate that per capita GDP and the total emissions of wastewater, sulfur dioxide, and solid waste across provinces are consistent with the EKC theory.
