Abstract

Meetings and events have been transformed by technological advancements in the last decade. Technology has significantly changed the tools accessible to meeting and event planners at every step of the planning process, even while in-person meetings are still crucial. For example, event and visitor bandwidth is becoming increasingly important and may, in many cases, be the deciding factor when selecting a website. Social media and mobile technology have become woven into the very fabric of event management. While conference organizers once advised attendees to “turn off your phones in the meeting space,” they now place a higher priority on social media interaction. Mobile devices are now necessary for many successful events, as attendees’ demands for a more active and participatory event experience grow. An overview of the major technologies, from well known to cutting edge, that have an impact on the meetings and events industry and enhance event success is provided in this chapter.
