Abstract

This paper investigates the novel mechanisms by which media coverage influences green technology innovation along the supply chain in the era of increasing environmental concerns and the pursuit of sustainable development. Unlike previous studies, it focuses on the supply chain, especially the spillover effects on surrounding firms, which fills the research gaps in this area. By analyzing the data of Chinese A-list companies from 2011 to 2021, we find that media coverage positively impacts a company’s green technology innovation. Moreover, the media coverage of focal firms not only has a positive effect on the media coverage of surrounding firms but also exhibits a spillover effect on their green technology innovation. These findings point out the crucial role of social opinion in driving green technology innovation and provide valuable insights for policymakers, businesses, and researchers. Based on these conclusions, we propose managerial recommendations to promote the technological progress and green development of the entire industry.
