Abstract

As the backbone of China’s economic development, the construction industry warrants attention from researchers and practitioners alike. In a highly competitive industry, it is important for firms to maintain business continuity during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic. Strategic planning and adaptability help firms to maintain workforce stability and sustain their operations. Using a quantitative approach, our study examined the relationship between human resource management (HRM) response strategies (i.e. employee flexibility, strategic talent management, and employee wellbeing) and the sustainability of the private construction firms in Shanghai, China. Data were collected via a survey questionnaire from 104 h personnel. The data analysis results confirmed the three hypotheses developed. Our research provides insights into how HRM response strategies enhance organizational resilience and sustainability of the construction industry.
