Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential of sustainable cycling tourism development in Karawang Regency, Indonesia, by referring to the route-specific, amenities, supplementary, and sustainability elements. The significance of this research is in studying the potential of sustainable cycling tourism development, which has not yet been noticed nor seriously studied before. This qualitative research was approached using a case study and triangulation technique utilizing an atlas.ti software. The results of this study show that (1) Cycling tourism in Karawang Regency has the potential to be developed both from the general aspect, namely the diversity of tourism potential, the potential for many cycling tourism communities, and the potential based on sustainability indicators for cycling tourism in Karawang Regency; (2) Amenities, including accommodation and restaurants, could be found quite widely in Karawang; (3) Supplementary cycling tourism in the form of a guidebook and Tourism Map has yet to be available; and (4) The sustainability of cycling tourism comes from tourist spending and its benefit on the economy, optimizing the positive impact on the environment, as well as benefits for residents and local socio-culture. It is recommended that there be a local government policy that regulates and adds more bike tour routes, bicycle-friendly accommodations and restaurants, and the availability of secure bicycle storage areas; also, the government publishes guidebooks and printed maps.
