Abstract

The rapid evolution of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has begun to reshape knowledge creation, information retrieval, and user engagement across multiple domains. Libraries, as institutions responsible for the preservation, organization, and dissemination of knowledge, are uniquely positioned to harness the power of GenAI. This paper explores how generative AI can support libraries in the future by enabling intelligent cataloging, personalized information services, automated content generation, and innovative learning environments. This analysis, informed by principles of Library and Information Science (LIS), details how GenAI offers unprecedented operational efficiency but simultaneously introduces complex ethical challenges, including the rise of misinformation, severe copyright uncertainties, and the amplification of algorithmic bias. The study concludes that generative AI, when implemented through a human-centric, hybrid model—where human expertise governs technological capability—can significantly extend the relevance of libraries in the digital era while reinforcing their enduring role as equitable and reliable knowledge gateways.
