International Trade and Economic Growth in the Caribbean Region

Abstract

The nexus between international trade and economic growth has occupied a prominent place in economic scholarship, yet its theoretical and empirical dimensions remain complex and partially resolved. This paper investigates the influence of trade on economic performance within the Caribbean context using panel data from ten Caribbean countries over the period 2010-2020. Utilizing three econometric estimation techniques, the study examines the causal dynamics between trade variables and economic growth. The empirical results demonstrate that exports are positively and significantly associated with GDP growth, while imports are negatively related, highlighting trade’s mixed role in the economy. The analysis concludes that strengthening the trade-growth relationship in the Caribbean requires targeted policy interventions to address structural trade challenges, foster export diversification, and promote the integration of technology-intensive industries.
