Abstract

Once introduced and defined, the categories used in scientific discourse often become a ’taken for granted’ part of scientific practice and rhetoric. In recent discussions regarding the nature of ’space’ — either with material spaces, metaphoric spaces or something between — this vagueness has been a common problem. This probably results from the different concepts of space that various academic disciplines set forth now that interest in spatiality and space has increased within various disciplines (Massey 1993a). The changing conditions of movement and communication — time-space compression (Harvey 1989) — are also affecting the concepts of space and time and call for an analysis of the contents of these categories. Massey (1993b) writes about the powergeometry of time-space which suggests that different social groups and different individuals are placed in distinct relationship to these flows and interconnections. This thesis also gives rise to different representations of space.
